Plainfield, NJ—July 31, 2025—The Barack Obama Green Charter High School proudly celebrates its students' achievement in earning second place as winners of the 2024-2025 Union County Student Training and Enrichment Program (UC STEP) civic engagement challenge. This year's initiative, titled “Wish Upon a Star: Make a Kid’s Dream Come True”, was designed to collect essential resources for children in foster care by supporting the Child Focus Organization.

The project reflects Child Focus's mission to prioritize the safety, well-being, and long-term stability of children who have experienced abuse or neglect. The organization operates three key programs, including the Open Door Store, which provides new clothing, shoes, toys, and personal care items for babies, children, and teens in the child welfare system.

“This was one of the most successful UC STEP projects yet, and has resulted in so much care being given to the foster children of Union County,” said Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes Leon. “As a former educator myself, it fills me with pride to witness the future leaders of our community get involved with their schools and really shine in their selflessness. These aren’t just young residents; these are Union County’s best and brightest, and we look forward to supporting them and seeing their successes for years to come.”

Barack Obama Green Charter High School extends its congratulations to all participating schools and their student leaders on such an impressive achievement. A special thank you to our student leaders, Shelby Holmes and Dr. Yasmin Griffin, for organizing this initiative, as well as  Union County Commissioner, Chairwoman Lourdes Leone, for her continued support. We are on the road to excellence!
